Dennis Miller

Dennis Miller

Following multiple successful engagements in The Orleans Showroom in 2009, five-time Emmy Award winner and crowd favorite Dennis Miller brings his hilarious stand-up routine back to venue, April 16, 17 and 18.

Celebrated as a witty comedian with an entertaining and intriguing stand-up routine, Miller keeps audiences laughing with his irreverent observations. A favorite of the public and critics alike, The New York Times said, “Mr. Miller is exquisitely attuned to contemporary foibles … his material can be scathing, his delivery low key … Mr. Miller reaches a bit farther than most comedians for the scorching comment … this smart aleck has an uncommonly sharp eye.”

Called “one of the premiere comedy talents in America today,” Miller emerged on the national scene in as the “Weekend Update” correspondent on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. After leaving SNL in 1991, Miller moved to HBO, where he hosted the critically acclaimed talk show Dennis Miller Live for nine seasons. No stranger to television talk shows, Miller is a regular on Fox News Channel’s Hannity and The O’Reilly Factor. He was also host and executive producer of CNBC’s Dennis Miller, which featured conversation, opinion and humor.

In a career that has spanned far beyond showrooms and interview sets, Miller has also made a name for himself as a film actor and author. His notable motion picture credits include such mid-‘90s favorites as Disclosure, The Net and Murder at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Miller’s “rant” books, including I Rant Therefore I Am, Ranting Again and The Rants have all been on The New York Times best sellers list.

Having called plays alongside Al Michaels and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts on ABC’s Monday Night Football for two seasons, Miller’s voice is as familiar to sports fans as it is to those who pack theaters to enjoy his comedy.

Tickets are now available starting from $49.95, plus tax. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 702.365.7075 or visiting www.orleanscasino.com.

Steven Wright to appear at Orleans Showroom

Steven Wright to appear at Orleans Showroom

Billed as the “Confucius of Comedy” by the New York Post, Academy Award winner and Grammy nominee Steven Wright brings his trademark wit, absurdist one-liners and monotone voice to The Orleans Showroom, April 10 and 11.

Beginning his comedy career at the age of 23 as a regular performer at Ding Ho’s Comedy Club and Chinese Restaurant in Cambridge, Mass., Wright got his first big break and was booked on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Following his on-air performance Wright was invited to return the following week for a rare back-to-back performance, launching his career into high gear. His new kind of comedy and lackluster voice caught the comedy world’s attention and he appeared on Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman and many reoccurring appearances of The Tonight Show. As his fame grew, he was given two of his own HBO stand-up specials titled, A Steven Wright Special and Wicker Chairs and Gravity.

His career expanded far beyond small screen appearances to include comedy albums, television specials and acting roles and writing for the silver screen. In 1985, Wright received a Grammy nomination for his debut album, I Have a Pony, and one for its sequel, I Still Have a Pony 22 years later. Following his second nomination, he was named the first inductee into The Boston Comedy Hall of Fame.

In 1989, he received an Academy Award for Best Short Film for his satiric film, The Appointments of Dennis Jennings, which he co-starred and wrote. Wright has appeared in several other small and big screen films including Mike Myers’ So I Married an Axe Murder, Desperately Seeking Susan, Half-Baked and has lent his voice to films for children including The Swan Princess and Babe 2: Pig in the Big City. Most recently, he appeared in Coffee and Cigarettes and The Aristocrats.

Wright’s ironic, deadpan comedy and bizarre observations continue to earn him regular guest spots on the late night talk show circuit with David Letterman, Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Ferguson while spreading laughs, giggles and smiles while touring the U.S., Canada and overseas.

Tickets are now available starting from $29.95, plus tax. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 702.365.7075 or visiting www.orleanscasino.com.

Elvis so big you can walk under him in the Viva Elvis show

Cirque du Soleil has a brand new show in Las Vegas. It is named “Viva Elvis” and it is playing in the theater at the new Aria Casino in CityCenter. The official opening will be February 19, 2010.

I was at their special press preview last week so I could take some photos and video for you. I was allowed all the photos I wanted, but video had to be kept short of the performances. They gave us three different performances from the show, not the entire show. It would be impossible to judge the storyline with such a short segment, so a full review will have to wait. I can tell you, though, the costumes were beautifully colored, the set was kept simple and the dancers were spectacular.

“Viva Elvis” takes you through many areas of Elvis Presley’s life, from childhood to adulthood. This story is set to the music he performed in his life. They will be displaying memorabilia during the show that Elvis fans have not yet seen.

There have been rumors floating around about a recent revamp that was ordered which left the show having to rewrite fifty percent of it. So, they are certainly giving it their all to make sure this is the ultimate Vegas show experience. I’m sure even the most die-hard Elvis fans are going to love this new Cirque show.

Before the performance, the creators took the stage and each gave a speech about how they felt about the project and how it came to be. I captured two of these interviews in my video. Priscilla Presley, who has been on board with this creative idea, said, “I think Elvis would be very pleased to know that he is back in Vegas again, in the way that he should be presented.”

The Venetian Las Vegas presents “Open Wings-Broken Strings” featuring acoustic performances by Eddie Kowalczyk of Live, Art Alexakis of Everclear and Leigh Nash of Sixpence None The Richer on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. in the 742-seat Venetian Showroom.

Ed Kowalczyk asks the question, “As a songwriter and a singer in a successful rock band, I have had the good fortune of being surrounded by incredible musicians, lots of wonderful production on both record and onstage and plenty of VOLUME but did you know that the story of your favorite songs often originates in a much different environment?”

“Open Wings-Broken Strings” is an opportunity for audience members to get to the heart of their favorite artists and songs in a unique and compelling way. Stripped down, intimate and acoustic, the audience will hear the strings on the guitar vibrate and buzz, the vocal chords hum and pulsate as the songs they love come to life like you never knew they could. In this intimate environment, the rock star steps out from behind the layers of decibel and drama to greet the audience with the essence, the story, and the song.

Eddie Kowalczyk, widely known as the Lead singer/front man/guitarist of the band Live, has built an impressive résumé with his band mates that include eight full-length albums, total CD sales exceeding 20 million, a huge international fan base and extensive touring all over the world. Live has been one of the most successful and enduring alternative rock bands of the 1990s and 2000s. One of the main things that have enabled Live to maintain a devoted fan base is the substantial and durable nature of their lyrics, which have often reflected Kowalczyk’s personal and spiritual concerns. Eddie is now offering and accentuating these nuances in a more intimate setting through his solo-acoustic performances.

Art Alexakis of Everclear has built a solid career and devoted fan base on heartfelt songs culled from real-life experiences that he’s always been open about including an absentee father and brother’s death from a drug overdose. He would later chronicle his experiences in his songs, including “Heroin Girl” on their 1995 breakthrough album, “Sparkle & Fade” (platinum in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and Australia) and “Father of Mine” on 1997’s “So Much For The Afterglow.”

Leigh Nash, perhaps best know as the dynamic, angelic-voiced lead singer of pop group Sixpence None the Richer. Following three album releases and the great success of their hit singles “Kiss Me,” “There She Goes,” and “Breathe Your Name” the band took a hiatus in 2004. Leigh took this time to release a solo record entitled “Blue on Blue” in 2006. In 2008, Sixpence None the Richer reunited to record a Christmas album entitled “Dawn of Grace,” a holiday piece fans had long requested. This year the band signed to EMI Credential and plan to record a new album for release in early 2010.

The event will feature Red Bull specialty cocktails and will be presented in partnership with KMXB’s Mix 94.1 FM. Tickets are on sale and priced at $27.75, $47.75 and $67.75 inclusive of tax and handling fees. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $127.75 and include a post show meet and greet and one cocktail. The show runs approximately 2.5 hours and will begin at 8 p.m. Performance dates are subject to change. Tickets are available for purchase at any Venetian Box Office, online at www.venetian.com and by phone at (702) 414-9000.

Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell are universally known as two of the original teenage idols of early rock ‘n’ roll. From January 15-17, Avalon and Rydell will bring their incomparable voices and generation-defining songs to the Orleans Showroom for a three-night engagement.

Frankie Avalon

Frankie Avalon

Childhood friends from the same south Philadelphia neighborhood, Avalon and Rydell first teamed up on a band called Rocco and the Saints, with Avalon on trumpet and Rydell on drums. But it was their voices that would establish both performers as two of the biggest pop music stars of the pre-Beatles era.

Known as a child prodigy on the trumpet, Avalon was deemed a virtuoso by a member of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, and made several guest appearances on The Perry Como Show and the Jackie Gleason Show. But it was his 1957 single “Dee Dee Dinah” that established Avalon as a singing sensation, quickly selling more than a million copies. Numerous gold albums and hit singles followed, including “Venus,” “Bobby Sox to Stockings,” “Just Ask Your Heart,” and “Why.”

Avalon has some 30 motion picture credits, including the highly successful 1960s Beach Party film series, including such favorites as Grease, Beach Party, Muscle Beach Party, Beach Blanket Bingo, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine, Bikini Beach and How to Stuff a Wild Bikini. His talents as a dramatic actor are evidenced in The Alamo and Guns of the Timberland. Other film credits include Skidoo, I’ll Take Sweden and Casino, among others.

Bobby Rydell

Bobby Rydell

Not to be outdone by his friend, Rydell recorded his first single hit in 1959 with “Kissin’ Time.” Over the next several years Rydell established himself as a teenage sensation with 34 Top 40 hits, including “We Got Love,” “ “Wild One,” “That Old Black Magic,” “I’ll Never Dance Again” and “Forget Him.” He was later recognized by Billboard as one of the Top Five Artists of the early ‘60s.

Beyond selling millions of records, Rydell enjoyed fame as a regular on such television shows as American Bandstand, The Red Skelton Show and The Milton Berle Show. Rydell was also featured in the classic film Bye Bye Birdie as Ann-Margret’s boyfriend, Hugo Peabody.

Tickets are now available starting from $29.95, plus tax. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Orleans Box Office at 702.365.7075 or visiting www.orleanscasino.com.

In addition to performing John Denver tribute concerts from coast to coast, Rivers has recorded and released several albums of original music. In Europe he has charted two top five songs, both for songs he wrote. Carrie Underwood comes to the Orleans Casino May 22nd, 2010

Carrie Underwood comes to the Orleans Casino May 22nd, 2010

One of country music’s most prolific and versatile power vocalists, Carrie Underwood, announced her new headline “Play On Tour” and a stop at the Orleans Arena May 22 with tickets for all shows going on sale next Friday, December 18. Underwood’s new headline tour kicks off March 11, 2010 with special guests Craig Morgan and Sons of Sylvia.

“I am getting so excited about next year as we are currently working through all the big plans for the tour,” says Underwood. “I cannot wait to perform new music and see familiar faces across the U.S. and Canada!”

Underwood spent this past year writing and recording for her new album Play On and performed a few select concerts. Her previous tour, 2008’s highly successful “Carnival Ride Tour” wrapped after 137 shows with 1.2 million fans in attendance.

Underwood recently launched her third album, Play On, at the No. 1 spot on both the country and pop album sales charts and has sold over 700,000 copies in 5 weeks. The release earned the highest first-week sales of the year for any solo country artist at that point and makes Carrie the only country act in Nielsen SoundScan history to achieve first-week sales of more than 300,000 units on each of their first three albums. The feat also extends to American Idol, where the Season Four winner is the first contestant to launch three albums in a row above the 300K threshold, with her 2005 debut, “Some Hearts,” now seven-times Platinum, and 2007’s Carnival Ride currently triple-Platinum.

Underwood is a four-time GRAMMY winner, ACM Entertainer of the Year, a three-time CMA and three-time reigning ACM Female Vocalist winner, and a member of the Grand Ole Opry with total album sales now in excess of 11 million.

Craig Morgan is signed to Sony Entertainment Nashville’s BNA Records label, and released his fifth studio album, That’s Why, last fall. His latest hit, the anthemic “Bonfire,” is currently Top 5 at country radio and headed for the top of the charts. Last year Morgan received one of country music’s highest honors – he was inducted into the membership of the Grand Ole Opry. Morgan has made more than 150 appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, and plays over 200 sold-out concerts a year. He spent ten years on active duty in the U.S. Army before launching his music career, and makes a point to perform as often as possible at U.S. military installations both in the U.S. and abroad.

Sons of Sylvia are currently finishing up their debut album release on 19 Recordings/Interscope Records due out in 2010. Ashley, Austin, and Adam Clark (formerly known as The Clark Brothers who won FOX’s Next Great American Band) are longtime friends of Underwood, and the band is currently featured on her new album in a powerful collaboration called “What Can I Say.”

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale December 18, and are priced at $35.00, $45.00 and $55.00, inclusive of tax and fees. Tickets can be purchased at the Orleans Arena Box Office by calling 702.284.7777 or by visiting www.orleansarena.com.

Returning to the Suncoast Showroom is Las Vegas legend Clint Holmes, along with his wife Kelly Clinton and sister Gayle Steele, to perform songs of the holiday season
December 25, 26 and 27.

Holmes, with his wife and sister, have created a warm and inviting show, perfect to share with family and friends this holiday. Together they will put their own spin on traditional holiday favorites, as well as performing by popular request, “William the Angel.” In the weekend of performances, Holmes is certain to perform songs that have long been associated with him throughout his career.

Holmes’ fans know him as more than just a singer. He’s famous for making every performance an original and captivating the audience with his signature style. Among his many recordings is the Top 10 smash hit “Playground In My Mind (My Name Is Michael).” His album Edges produced several standout songs, including the single “Feel Like Makin’ Love.” Earlier this year, Holmes partnered with long-time friends Susan Anton, Domenick Allen and Martin Nievera to create the critically acclaimed Vocal Soup—a showcase of solo performances, duets and group numbers.

With a long history of entertaining audiences in Las Vegas, Clint is known for his six-year run in Clint Holmes at Harrah’s. In 2002, an updated version of the musical opened at The Royal George Theatre in Chicago. Among the show’s rave reviews, the Chicago Tribune called it “a night of fully realized theatrical entertainment.”

In a career that began with an invitation from Joan Rivers to be her sidekick and announcer on The Late Show, Clint Holmes has proven himself as a well-respected performer, even earning the honor of being the featured performer at the Democratic National Convention on the evening of Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential nomination. Don Rickles

Don Rickles

Legendary comedian Don Rickles, who has starred in Las Vegas theaters longer than any other performer in the history of the gambling mecca, has signed for a third consecutive year of performances with The Orleans Hotel and Casino.

The much-honored comedian will launch his 51st consecutive year as a Las Vegas headliner when he brings his one-of-a-kind humor to The Orleans Showroom for his first scheduled engagement February 20 and 21.

Rickles took his first step toward national fame in 1957 when Frank Sinatra wandered into the small Hollywood nightclub where Rickles was performing. The still-unknown Rickles eyed Sinatra and said, “I just saw your movie, The Pride and the Passion, and I want to tell you, the cannon’s acting was great. And, make yourself at home, Frank. Hit somebody.” Sinatra doubled up laughing and became one of Rickles’ biggest boosters among Hollywood celebrities. Rickles soon became the “in” comic among Hollywood stars, who flocked to his nightclub engagements to become the targets of his insults.

Since then, his unparalleled career has never missed a beat. While making his mark in movies, television, theater and recordings, Rickles has remained a master of nightclub comedy with a continuing love affair with live audiences.

“We’re proud of our long-standing relationship with Don and thrilled to have him with Boyd Gaming for more than ten years now,” said Terry Jenkins, Boyd Gaming Corporate Director of Entertainment. “He’s the consummate Las Vegas showroom star and funnier than ever.”

Rickles is enthusiastic about the opportunity to continue performing in the 827-seat Showroom, an intimate venue that allows entertainers to connect with their audiences.

“The Orleans Showroom always reminds me of the golden days in Las Vegas. It generates the warmth of that great era that featured the likes of Frank Sinatra,” said the comedian. “And, the accommodations at the hotel are just terrific. This year I understand they’ll be giving me a room that even has a sink and shower…”

In 2007, Rickles made his mark in the literary world with his memoir Rickles’ Book and has also won two Primetime Emmy Awards, including for Best Individual Performance in a Variety or Musical for the 2008 HBO special Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project.

Rickles will also appear at The Orleans Showroom October 16 and 17. Tickets start from $74.95, plus tax. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 702.365.7075 or visiting www.orleanscasino.com.

Just in time to spread holiday cheer, The Scintas return to the Suncoast Showroom with their first-ever Christmas show, A Very Scinta Christmas, December 18, 19 and 20.

The Scintas, Buffalo, New York-raised brothers Joey and Frankie, sister Chrissi and “Irish Scinta” Peter O’Donnell, entertain, surprise and provide an anything-but-typical performance filled with music, comedy and impersonations. “Guest” appearances will be fruitful for these special holiday performances as Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, George Burns, Kermit the Frog and many other favorites help The Scintas celebrate the special time of year with their own holiday twist.

Collectively, they’ve dazzled sell-out crowds in Las Vegas showrooms and on the road. Individually, each member of The Scintas has enjoyed a stunning rise to fame. Frankie, recognized as a musical prodigy, appeared on The Merv Griffin Show at age 11. He plays the keyboard on the show and is also a master guitar, mandolin, banjo, drum and bass player. Joey, who originally intended to become a music teacher, developed and mastered his talent for comedy and impressions. The baby of the family, Chrissi, is known for her stunning renditions of the big ballads. Although not related, Peter O’Donnell has been a member of the close-knit clan since joining The Scintas in 1988. He has played gigs with more than 700 bands.

A family on stage and off, The Scintas often welcome their mother Mary Scinta, affectionately known as “Mama Scinta,” and their brother Tony, a retired Buffalo homicide detective, and his family, as special guests at their shows.

Tickets are now available starting from $29.95, plus tax. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 702.636.7075 or visiting www.suncoastcasino.com.

An Evening with Marilyn, free show at the Hilton November 14th

An Evening with Marilyn, free show at the Hilton November 14th.

The Las Vegas Hilton presents a special evening of art … on canvas, on guitar and on screen … entitled “An Evening with Marilyn” on Saturday, November 14. This event is open to the public and free of charge.

The evening begins from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Tempo Lounge and the Hilton Theater, where guests will be able to view a display of the “Marilyn Series” art exhibit by renowned painter and sculptor, Ludvic. Entertainment in Tempo during the viewing will be provided by world-class virtuoso jazz guitarist, Robert Conti.

At 8 p.m. guests are invited to watch a free viewing of the classic film, “Some Like It Hot,” directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The viewing will be in the Hilton Theater on a large screen with state-of-the-art theater sound.

The artist of the “Marilyn Series,” Ludvic, is known for the diversity of works he creates. From large-scale portraits, abstract paintings, still life food paintings, and sculptures created from reclaimed and recycled materials, his works have been featured in numerous museums and galleries nationally and internationally.

Ludvic’s large-scale paintings of Marilyn have been in the making for several years. His variations on the theme of Marilyn are endless through the use of color, texture and size. “Many people have asked why I have such a longstanding, ongoing encounter with Marilyn. To me, she is the epitome of glamour and beauty combined with the charisma of a goddess. As an artist who tires to capture beauty in all things, painting Marilyn as a subject matter is inescapable. She is a true beauty. I only hope my paintings show the intricacies of her personality and the beauty of her soul.”

The ‘Evening with Marilyn’ continues after the exhibit of Ludvic’s works with the free viewing of “Some Like It Hot” in the Hilton Theater at 8 p.m. No tickets are required as guests are invited to get their seats on a first come, first served basis.
