Bottles of wine managed to stay in the tree much to many wine conoisseur's amazement

The Renaissance Hotel in Las Vegas held their Fourth Annual Holiday Reception and Silent Christmas Tree Auction on December 15, 2009. This auction benefited the Boys and Girls Club of Las Vegas. Over $10,000 was raised that night and these funds will benefit programs and services that enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.

The festivities included the silent auction of six elaborately decorated Christmas trees sponsored by numerous organizations such as ENVY The Steakhouse, Elite Media, Encore Productions, Levi’s, BRAINtrust Marketing, Practical Flooring, Top Line Pest Eliminator Inc., and Jenni Plumber. The six unique tree themes included the Toy Tree, A Night on The Town, Elegance By Design, Technology, A Tree To ENVY and Pamper Her trees. Each tree was loaded with fabulous gifts that kept with the tree’s theme. I saw many bottles of wine, vacation stays on the Las Vegas Strip, loads of gift certificates to popular businesses, oodles of toys and a lot of other way cool stuff.

As the choir sang in the Renaissance Hotel lobby, guests enjoyed complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cocktails from ENVY The Steakhouse and participated in various raffles throughout the night. My particular favorite was a mushroom ravioli, which I would have called a beef pierogi, but who I am? A chef? I think not. Regardless of the name, it was delicious! There was wine everywhere, sodas and other goodies to snack on at various stations while people networked and made new acquaintances.

“It was incredible to see the community and local businesses come out and support a cause that impacts the future leaders of Las Vegas,” said Tom Xavier, General Manager of the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel. “We have worked with Boys & Girls Clubs many times before and each time it is an honor to know that we are making a positive contribution to such an important program.”

A couple of people told me they were disappointed in the turn out this year. They said that the crowd had been much larger in prior years. One lady told me that she usually knows nearly everyone in the room, but at this year’s event she knew very few because the usual familiar faces were missing this year. I suppose the economy struggling has forced many to cut back on their donations just to keep even these days.

One of the topics of discussion going around the tables was “How in the Hell did they get that wine bottle to stay on that tree like that?” Surely, if any one of us had tried it, we’d be running for the club soda to clean up the mess from the carpet.

Cleverly crafted by RHUMBAR’s expert mixologist, Kristen Schaefer used some of the winter season’s most comforting ingredients to create this specialty holiday cocktail. “When developing the recipe for Kristen’s Hottest Toddy, I really wanted to create a cocktail that was able to generate that cozy feeling that the holiday season brings,” said Schaefer. “I incorporated uplifting and soothing ingredients, like citrus and vanilla, and combined them with the comfort of warm spices, rum and hot tea, for a wintery, heart-warming cocktail.”

Kristen’s Hottest Toddy:

12 raspberries

3 orange wheels

4 Constant Comment tea bags

3 cups of Captain Morgan spiced rum

1 cup of rock candy syrup

3 cups water

Whipped cream

Served with a raspberry and a mint sprig

Using a coffee pot, place the raspberries, orange wheels and tea bags in a coffee filter. Add the rum, rock candy syrup and water to the coffee pot reservoir. Brew the ingredients. Pour into a glass mug and top with whipped cream, a raspberry and a mint sprig or garnish.
